Snorkeling back to the Stone Age

Discover the hidden remains of a Stone Age landscape in the Southern Funen Archipelago. Join one of Øhavsmuseet Faaborg’s archeologists on a magical tour under the sea, and explore one of the many sites along the coast, where traces of the Stone Age people lie scattered over the seabed. Whilst looking for flint axes and arrowheads, do not forget to enjoy the amazing scenery above the surface.

You will get a thorough introduction to snorkeling techniques, and we provide the necessary gear for you.

Guided tour behind bars

Why not serve some time in our local Town Jail and learn about justice and punishment. Inside the walls, you will get a taste of past and present prison life, where the experience of being behind bars gives rise to many reflections among young and old alike. Challenge your opinion on the legal system, when you make your way around. Why do we lock up people? How are the conditions in a Danish jail? And what does justice mean? Such questions are likely to occur when you visit the prison yard, the cells and the court of justice.

When Faaborg traded with China

Pay a visit to “Den Gamle Gaard” – a charming old merchant’s house from 18th and 19th century. Here, the story about Faaborg and its wealthy merchant families comes alive. Follow in the footsteps of Poul “The seafarer on China” who was born a farmer’s boy in the nearby village of Svanninge and later became a distinguished businessman. The guided tour also gives an insight into the town’s significant trading houses and the Voigt family, whose daughter became the first love of Hans Christian Andersen.
Enjoy a glass of the local cherry wine KIJAFA, before you take a stroll in the garden to enjoy the salty breeze and a view over the Southern Funen archipelago. It is easy to imagine how the old cargo ships entered the harbour to unload their exotic goods from China.

Guided tour in the hills of Svanninge

Explore the stunning Ice Age hills of Svanninge Bakker. This beautiful site belongs to Denmark’s most unique natural areas and has been formed by Ice Age glaciers around 12,000 years ago. Here, gigantic ice blocks and snowmelt have left large depressions in the ground, thereby creating this impressive type of Danish landscape. Follow our outdoor guide into the rolling hills and learn about their origins and how Nature has influenced people’s lives throughout generations. Enjoy the stories about trolls and elves and listen to the colourful past of the hills that covers everything from gallows to an outdoor dance venue.

Guided tour to a Stone Age “churchyard”

Join a guided expedition into the fascinating ”Pipstorn Skov”, where Nature and man’s history is unfolded before your very eyes. In this hilly forest area, you will find one of Denmark’s largest concentrations of megaliths and gain insight into the lives and beliefs of prehistoric humans. During this scenic walk, you will find a flourishing kingdom of wild plants. Meet the Giant Horsetail, a favourite snack of the dinosaurs, and discover the special trees that have hosted elves and other mythical creatures. And maybe still do.

Family walk among megalithic wonders

Discover “Pipstorn Skov”, a mesmerizing forest area in the outskirts of Faaborg. Here, one of Denmark’s most dense area of ancient monuments are hidden – 42 megaliths to be precise. Among these up to 6,000 years old graves, our outdoor guide will entertain you with stories about our old beliefs in Nordic gods, trolls, elves and other supernatural creatures that have formed an important part of people’s lives throughout history. Thanks to many breaks, time to play and small snacks, the walk is also suitable for groups with kids, whether you have a birthday party or a family gathering.
